Zones, Floors, and Labels
If you have at least two rooms where you have placed some smart home devices, it may become a bit confusing where each entity is, or the list of entities may be too long.
The main benefit lies in the organization of devices according to their physical location in the house. This way, you can easily divide entities into specific rooms or even by floors of the house. This is especially useful if you have multiple similar rooms at home, such as hallways on different floors. Such division allows you to find and manage devices more quickly without having to go through long lists.
Zones and floors bring clear structure to your home, while labels offer a more flexible way to assign devices to multiple categories, allowing for even more detailed organization.
Another significant advantage is the simplification of the automation creation process. When configuring automation, you can simply select a zone, such as the living room, and all devices in that zone will be automatically included. This is especially useful if you add new devices to the zone, as they automatically become part of the relevant automations without the need for further adjustments.
Zones
Zones are typically defined as rooms. To manage zones, go to Settings -> Zones, Labels, and Floors -> Zones in the Home Assistant user interface. Here you can add, edit, or delete zones as needed.
Floors
Using floors allows for another level of organization, where you can group zones (rooms) into logical units corresponding to the individual floors of your house. This feature is useful for multi-story houses where you want a quick overview of which devices are located on which floor.
Labels
Labels offer a high degree of flexibility, allowing you to assign multiple categories to a device. These can be used not only for further device segmentation but also for automations. Management can be found in Settings -> Zones, Labels, and Floors -> Labels.
